Frequently asked questions
Nine decades of the questions we hear most — about buying, sizing, caring for, and valuing hand-knotted oriental rugs.
How do I know if an oriental rug is authentic?
Authentic hand-knotted oriental rugs are made entirely by hand, with each knot tied individually over months or even years. Look for small irregularities in the pattern, fringe that is part of the foundation rather than sewn on, and a pile that shows the design clearly on the back. When in doubt, Doug Nassif can authenticate a piece for you.
How often should an oriental rug be professionally cleaned?
Most oriental rugs benefit from professional washing every three to five years, depending on foot traffic and household conditions. Regular vacuuming between cleanings helps protect the fibers and keeps the colors vivid.
What is a rug appraisal, and when do I need one?
An appraisal documents your rug’s value for insurance, estate, resale, or personal purposes. You may need one when updating homeowner’s insurance, settling an estate, planning a sale, or after damage. Doug provides appraisals across Iowa and the Midwest.
What’s the difference between Persian, Turkish, and tribal rugs?
Persian rugs (from Iran) are known for intricate floral and curvilinear designs with high knot counts. Turkish rugs tend toward bolder geometric patterns and especially durable construction. Tribal rugs are woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic weavers and are prized for their graphic patterns and expressive, freehand use of color.
How do I choose the right rug size for my room?
In a living room, the front legs of your major furniture should sit on the rug. Under a dining table, the rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table edges so chairs stay on it when pulled out. In a bedroom, aim for 18 to 24 inches of rug beyond the sides and foot of the bed. Tip: outline the size with painter’s tape first to see it in the space.
